This workshop will present effective non-lethal weapons and tactics for combating piracy. The session will also examine the advantages and disadvantages of non-lethal weapons and help you determine which methods are most appropriate for your organization.

  • Practical and non-traditional tactics to deter and disrupt pirate attacks
  • Current regulations and guidelines for use of weapons on board commercial vessels

This workshop will propose a framework for understanding the complex issues that lead to maritime disorder and examine the implications for governments, maritime forces and the shipping industry

What will be covered:

  • The factors that lead to maritime disorder
  • The complex interactions between these factors
  • The impact on the coastal society and the maritime domain
  • The options for exploitation of maritime disorder from a perturbed coastal society
  • The implications:
    • For governments – the importance of a multi-agency, cross disciplinary approach to establish a strategy for engagement
    • For maritime forces – what are the roles for maritime forces and what might be the implications for the types of vessels needed?
    • For industry – what is the role of industry and how might it be affected or lead any initiatives?

  • Develop a better understanding of the complex factors that contribute to maritime disorder
